How to adjust touch vibration (haptic) settings

Touch vibrations, also known as haptics, help you interact with your phone by signalling that you’ve typed a key or pressed a button. Touch vibration can be enabled or disabled for several different aspects of Android 9, and the strength of the vibration can be adjusted.

Enable/Disable Keyboard Vibration (Gboard)

The default keyboard (called Gboard) in Android 9 supports touch vibration. To enable or disable keyboard touch vibration:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard
  2. Select Gboard, then choose Preferences
  3. Scroll down to the option Haptic feedback on keypress, then use the toggle to enable or disable vibration.

Adjust keyboard vibration strength

The strength of the keyboard’s touch vibration can be adjusted using the next option in the menu, Vibration strength on keypress. Just tap the the option, then use the slider that appears to choose a duration for the vibrations.Tap OK to confirm your selection.

Troubleshooting

If touch vibration does not seem to be working, or is only working for some actions and not others, try the steps below.

Set the keyboard vibration strength manually

The keyboard vibration strength can be set to zero, and in some cases migrating between Android versions may result in a default vibration strength of zero. Try manually setting the vibration strength to something higher:

  1. Go to Settings > System > Languages & input > Virtual keyboard
  2. Choose Gboard, then Preferences
  3. Choose Vibration strength on keypress
  4. Move the slider to the right and tap OK.

Enable Touch vibration

Location: Settings > Sound > Advanced > Touch vibration
Toggling this option will disable or enable touch vibration system-wide. If it is on already, then toggle it off and toggle it on again.

Enable Vibration

Location: Settings > Accessibility > Vibration > Touch vibration
Toggling this option will disable or enable touch vibration system-wide. If it is on already, then toggle it off and toggle it on again.

Note: The Vibration and Touch vibration options can be configured separately, and turning off either option will disable all touch vibration on the phone.
