Kernel sources may also prove useful for getting a version of TWRP running

the make process is always complaining about building from a kernel image

I agree. This is in our pipeline for discussions with ODM/Mediatek. Don’t have a solid ETA on it yet though - expect anywhere from 2-5 months for some movement.
