Regardless of the APN settings that I have gotten from my service provider (publicmobile.ca) I cannot get the data to work. I bought it a few years ago and gave up then. I’m trying again to see if there is anything new on this horizon? It’s such a waste if I can’t get this to work.
Have you tried updating to Android 14 already? Multiple people with APN issues have reported that updating to the latest version fixed their connection/messaging/data issues.
Thank you. I just tried it and it didn’t make a difference. But at least I have Android 14 on now. I didn’t realize it would be so easy.
Looked at their support forums and it appears that they’re not great about sending the right settings. As this page (Solved: APN - Community) from last year says, they’ve used a few different servers and ports over the years. The ‘new’ settings match what they have on their undated (Changing APN Settings on Android Phones | Public Mobile) directions. Of course, after putting in the settings, if it doesn’t work, people do also recommend trying to reset the network settings or reloading defaults after it’s connected, but this post (Solved: Re: Error in APN settings sent from Public Mobile - Community) suggests that PM is terrible about sending working settings automatically if you don’t have one of their most popular phones.
Anyways, best of luck. From looking at their forums, it seems like a chaotic mess to try to battle through and likely that their community will give better answers than their official support. From a quick glance through their supported phone bands, the Teracube 2e should work on their 4G bands, though of course it has no 5G support and won’t touch those…
thanks for that! So switching companies should work? Which ones would you recommend?
Switching would probably work, but if you’re trying to pick a new phone plan, my process would probably be starting by checking price for what I need, then looking at their coverage to make sure that it’d be useful where I’m at, then I’d try to double check their official phone and band supported lists to make sure they aren’t just limiting to their own limited devices, then checking through their support/forums to see if people seem happy or frustrated. Here, you could see if anyone has specific recommendations that they’ve tried. I’m not (currently) in Canada, so while I can do some basic searching and research, it’s generalized rather than specific and personal knowledge.
From a bit of searching, there’s several charts and many websites trying to make their recommendations, but this one (Prepaid Phone Plans: Compare the Best Prepaid Cell Phone Plans - Informr) seems like it might be a nice starting point as you can set your province, minutes/text/data, and see lots of carriers and plans compared. Of note is that each price’s term is not necessarily fixed to the same level, so make sure that you’re comparing like to like… The 19 dollar per week PhoneBox plan is directly above the 24 dollar per month No Name Mobile plan and getting to the final stages and realizing that your favorite plan looks great because it actually costs 4.5x as much as you thought is a depressing realization.
Thank you so much for all your help!
