Are there any reliable instructions for Linux users? I have a Ubuntu and Debian system.

Not really, unfortunately.

SPFlash is closed-source and not packaged for distros by MediaTek, so running their tarball binary is iffy, depending upon what system lib versions you have.

I boot into a Win2Go USB currently.

Okay so if you run into any software issues that formatting the phone can’t solve, you’d have to get the phone replaced then.
