Screen inaccessible during phone calls

I’ve had this problem for awhile but thought maybe someone else would report it and it would get fixed without me. Alas, that has not been the case. Here is the issue, and it is very strange. Every time I am on a phone call, once the screen times out, I cannot access the phone until they hang up. That means I can’t click numbers in menus and I can’t even hang up a phone call because there is no screen when I am on the call. I’ve tapped the screen and pressed the lock button–all the normal things. None of it works and it’s been going on for many many months. Anyone else have this issue? Anyone have a solution? I don’t have any updates available and I’ve restarted my phone and turned it off and on many times. Thanks in advance!

Try very vigorously cleaning the screen and removing any screen protector that doesn’t have cutouts by the top speaker.

I can try! I only have the screen protector that came with the phone. And the screen works just fine as soon as the calls are over. It’s only during phone calls specifically that it will not light up.

Which phone do you have? I had an issue like this that slowly developed on my original release 2e. However, after I did the firmware update to Android 11, it appears to be resolved (or at least, a lot less frequent).

So if you have a 2e on the original Android 10 firmware, it might be worth doing the upgrade.

Good luck!

I also have the 2e! I’m glad I’m not the only one who has experienced this problem.

I have had Android 11 for awhile. In fact it may have started when I got Android 11. Maybe I should try the opposite and revert back and see if it helps. Thanks!

If you are comfortable with using Beta builds, we have Android 13 Beta 2 available:

@xpaar - try either or both things mentioned by @Saijin_Naib

  1. Clean or remove the screen protector.
  2. Upgrade to Android 13 build

A similar issue happened for me on both Android 12, and is still happening but less frequently after using the in-phone updater to update to android 13. Which doesn’t seem to be a beta anymore? I could be wrong though.

I have a whole laundry list of issues which make it phone almost unusable, and get in the way of pretty much every normal function.

It happens most frequently if I run a map program and then get called. It won’t let me accept calls while the GPS is running and if it does accept them makes the screen dark and touchscreen non-functional so I can’t end the call without removing the battery.

More generally the touchscreen also freezes and stops working either partially or completely regularly.
I had to change my password from a 16 digit passphrase to 4 numbers since it would freeze out 3/4 of the time before I could actually type out my password. So I couldn’t get into it without fiddling with it for like 5-10 minutes.
Which in an emergency could result in my death.

Welcome!

Sorry to hear about your issues with your screen. Those sound very frustrating.

Can you tell me if the screen has any damage (hairline fractures from a drop, water ingress) or has any protectors or films over it?

About how long have you had your unit?

I sent in an email to support now that I found which one to send it too.

I have the screen protector that came with it. And have had it about 2 years.
No water ingress, or visible fractures on the unit itself.

I’m sorry to hear you’re having the same problems. I longer restart seemed to help for me. I turned the phone off and took the battery out and waited several minutes before turning it back on. I haven’t had the screen issue with phone calls since.

My screen also is weird sometimes. I might try a new screen protector since I also have the original, but I find the problems tend to be because some tiny fleck is on the side of my screen (beyond where the protector is). It is kind of annoying. I usually lock the screen and wipe the whole screen, especially along the uncovered edges and it is usually back to normal. But I think the screen is just particularly sensitive. If I barely touch the screen it will click to the point if what it seems like hovering over the call button will call.

ive had this happen several times after updates for google systems apps (phone, contacts, etc.). It seems to be a sensor bug ( that detects if phone is next to ear or not). The only temporary solution i found was turning sensors off , but have to remember to do this before i make call or am expecting/ answer a call. tedious but otherwise cannot do anything until other party ends call. I was able to get the sensor off button in the topbar drop down, but that option was buried & difficult to find , for me. It may also be a bug in google assistant, as assistant keeps turning off my antivirus, rotation control, and screenshot apps among otherthings, so maybe doing things with the sensor sensitivity as well. Eventually it seems to resolve itself but can be upto a month at times. very frustating . Im still using Android 10, im not comfortable enough to try & attempt the root upgrade available. and i use the terecube 1 not 2e.
